Speaking of critiques and judging...

TABPI (Trade, Association and Business Publications International) launched a new Magazine Critique Service (MCS) geared to B2B publications of all sizes.

Unlike a lot of the consultant services offered, MCS is a review provided by some of the most respected editors and designers working in B2B journalism today. This feedback is essentially a colleague-to-colleague analysis of what works and what improvements magazines need to make to stay fresh and on top of the industry.

The MCS provides objective, outside analyses that can show decision makers in an organization how to take content to the next level -- without the time and expense of a full-blown revamp.

Each magazine will receive three detailed reviews on specific editorial and design aspects of the publication. TABPI will provide a report to the editor, who can thoroughly review the results with the editorial and design staff.

TABPI must receive submissions by Sept. 22. Review time is eight to 10 weeks from the time materials are received. Complete details of the program are available (along with a submission form and two sample critiques) here.

Cost for the Standard Critique is $575. Three reviewers will evaluate your sample issues page by page. A Premium Critique is $975; one of the three reviewers will be a TABPI-approved editorial consultant. In addition to the report, the consultant will conduct a one-hour conference call with you and your staff for more detailed, interactive feedback and a question-and-answer session.

The MCS is sponsored by RedRover Reprint & Content Management services.

So, you want to be a judge?

Think you have what it takes to pick the best of the best? ASBPE is looking for judges for next year’s AZBEE awards.

Judges are needed with expertise in editorial, design, web and newsletters. To apply, download a copy of the form. Fax it to (630) 510-4501.

Here are some of the qualifications:
* You must be currently working or retired from a B2B publication (minimum 5 years’ experience).

* You cannot judge a category your company has entered.

* Time. Enough to judge 10 to 300 entries in a one-month period between March and April.

There are plenty of categories from which to chose, and it’s really a worthwhile experience.

ASBPE offers 17 case studies in a neat bundle

If you hadn’t heard... ASBPE has another new book for B2B editors and students, “Journalism That Matters: How Business-to-Business Editors Change the Industries They Cover.”

The book focuses on 17 stories where B2B editors effected change in their industries.

Here are a few of the case studies:
* How federal agencies stepped up job verifications for applicants thanks to Government Computer News discovering something fishy was going on with a top Homeland Security IT official.

*Federal Computer Week causes the U.S. Department of Defense to admit weaknesses in its computer network.

And my personal favorite...
* How London-based Legal Business went after the previously untouchable U.K. judicial system. (If you attended the national convention in Chicago this year, you had the opportunity to hear this delightful saga firsthand.)

The book is ASBPE’s second foray into the journalism tome spectrum. It’s available from publisher Marion Street Press and from ASBPE here online.

Tell them Jyme sent you.

It's a date!

Mark your calendars! We now have a date for our next meeting: Thursday, Sept. 28. It'll be an evening meeting in Irving/Las Colinas. Right now, we are working on an agenda and firming up a place. Suggestions are welcome, although I have a few places in mind that will accommodate us.
I am really looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new people!
More details to follow.

Welcome from your president

Welcome to the new DFW ASBPE Blog!

I am excited that this new forum will allow editors in the Metroplex to get up-to-the-minute information on happenings in the area.

Right now, we (Tonie and I) are in the process of setting up a relaunch for the DFW Chapter. Plan on a mid-September meeting. More details to follow as they are available.
